Maximizing Profits by Improving Slot Machine Ergonomics
Players spend more time and money at slot machines when they are comfortable. Using our unique blend of empathic and user-centric design coupled with our prototyping expertise, DiMonte Group conducted an ergonomic study to give Elite’s slot machines a competitive edge.
Ergonomic Research: A Deeper Dive
- Visited casinos and observed users in their natural gaming environment
- Recognized that women tend to play slot machines more often and need a place for their purse
- Used anthropometric data resources like “Measure of Man and Woman” by Henry Dreyfus
Physical Mockup and Testing
- Constructed a versatile foam core mockup featuring ten different adjustable elements
- Tested the design on 13 test subjects representing a wide spectrum of sizes, weights, and genders
- Designed for two configurations that share the same base: One tall screen vs. two smaller screens, to reduce cost
- Tested reflective plastic over the screens to assess the glare at various angles
- Considered ideal placement for the buttons, touchscreen, cup-holder, and a purse hook
- Used SOLIDWORKS 3D CAD software to ensure precision of the mockup
Deliverables
- Mined the data to determine the best general ergonomic position and angle for all of the elements
- Developed CAD schematics of the physical elements and presented the research findings to our client
